It’s official. The android version of the magicJack app “Talk Free” is now upgraded to “magicApp” with a fancy new logo. I removed the previous version for the following reasons:

magicApp android logoThe app was a battery drain.

The app forced all calls to go directly to magicJack voice mail if both the app and a magicJack device with the same number were in the same intranet.

Upon cursory inspection, both of these challenges seem to have been met. I will leave the app on my device and see what happens.

So far, it only seems to be available for the android version. And it looks and sounds great. I look forward to changes in the iOS version too. Please post your feedback in the comments section!

UPDATE 2017.07.31

  1. Magicjack is not accepting my email and my password

I need a code for magicjack

    1. Stacy,
There is no “code”. Activation and registration are always device-specific. In other words, unless you already own a device, you can’t make the magicApp work unless you actually pay for the app. You will also be unlikely to register the app anyway since you live in the Bahamas.

  2. I used magic jack app for an year when my sister gifted me a samsung Galaxy s3, It was subscribed for 1 year. recently upon hearing that my subscription ended last month, while trying to call her in US but could not connect, I uninstalled and downloaded the app afresh. But I am not allotted any number and neither I get connected to their support website. When I open the app it asks me to be ‘online’ when I am actually online! Kindly give me a solution. I am from India.

    1. Subbu,
As you have noticed, you cannot renew the app or the device from outside the United States. You may want to ask your sister to renew for you since she lives there.
      Good luck!

  3. I would like to know about magicjack plus whether or not you need a computer and if you can convert my home phone to the magicjack hook up

    1. Livingston, if you have really crummy slow DSL, way out in the bayou, as I suspect you do, it may not be worth the effort to get a magicJack. If you live in a town with decent DSL – better than 6Mbsp down, 215Mbps up, it may be worth your while, but don’t expect to have decent conversations and surf the web or watch a video at the same time. Since you’re on DSL, if you decide to close your existing phone account with Bellsouth/AT&T, it will mean you’ll have to start a new AT&T account with a naked ADSL line (no phone, just ADSL internet). This can be tricky, especially if you don’t also have a cell phone so you can at least talk to someone during the process. It will likely cost only slightly less than what you’re paying now per month, but if you talk with the folks from AT&T, you might be able to find out whether the cost is worth it. You could just buy a magicJack GO and try it out with your existing connection if you don’t mind shelling out sixty clams on an experiment. Check out this page on registration for new users. Also check out the two part series on cutting the cord: Part 1 | Part 2. Good luck!

  4. Hi, since I upgraded to the new android MagicApp my cell phone won’t ring when a call comes in and also the wifi shuts off if the screen goes blank. I have a Droid X.

    1. Adrian, while it wouldn’t surprise me if an upgraded app suddenly stopped working, it seems unlikely that the magicApp would have access to WiFi control. I googled “android phone no longer ringing”. The first thing that popped up was about a bug in DroidX–your phone. There is a lot of side chatter, but there may be some helpful tips there. Pretty far down in the thread, one guy shows a way to get the phone ringing again.

If that’s not the problem, what other apps were installed or upgraded at the same time? Could any of those apps cause the problem? If this were my phone, I’d uninstall the magicJack app first. Reboot and see if your phone still has the same problems. If it does, you know some other app is responsible. Uninstall all apps that were updated at about the same time, one at a time starting with most likely culprits: those that adapt phone-ring capability and WiFi until your phone behaves correctly. Then reinstall magicJack. If the problem comes back even after all likely offending apps are removed, there may be other extenuating circumstances, like the bug mentioned above.

Whatever you end up doing, definitely back up your phone data before puttering around. At the very worst, you may have to go back to your phone provider and get it restored to manufacturer’s specs or get a replacement. Good luck!

  5. Thanks so much for the ideaas. On one fellow’s suggestion, I reset the battery, and then rebooted with the phone on it’s back (which affects something called a smart profile) and then the next call rang in normally (!). The wifi would still drop if the screen was blank for a while, so I installed the Wifi Fixer App, and now that doesn’t happen anymore.

    1. I’m glad you got resolution and closure without having to go through all the tedium I suggested. I suspected it might not be magicApp.

  6. I have existing account with magic app but i can’t use it to my new Android phone. No other option but to login account. How to register new account. Help need here please. Thanks.

    1. If you want to create a new account, you’ll need to use a different email address with magicJack. The only reasons I can think of to get a new account is if you’re setting this up for another user, or if you’re trying to get out of paying to use the service after the first free year of using the app. If you don’t have a magicJack Go or magicJack Plus, the service is not free after the first year. Good luck!

  7. I have the magicapp on my phone. For some reason it logged me out the account that i was logged on to at the time. So i tired to re-install the app but it wont let me sighn up using a different account. because i forgot my old one. what can i do?

    1. In a browser, try resetting your password using the directions on this link. Is it possible that now it’s over a year and magicApp wants you to start paying for it? Check the phone tab once you’ve logged in at my.magicJack.com. If it says it’s time to renew, that might be the problem. Just creating a new account to circumvent this unfortunately won’t work. (Sorry for the delayed response. This was in my wordpress spam box and I just checked my spam.) Best of luck.

  8. My old user email is no longer valid so i cant retrieve my password.
how can I change my email address ??

  9. Hi,
I’ve got a used samsung galaxy s3 with magicjack already installed on it and I can’t find the option “create a new account”. Please help me.

    1. First, log out of the app. Then, go to settings, apps, and scroll down to magicApp. Kill the app. Close settings. Click the icon to open the app again. If you don’t see it, go to the app drawer and search for it alphabetically. Click the magicApp icon. Then when it asks you for credentials, it should give you the option to create new credentials. Best of luck!

      1. i did all steps u mentioned above and still not appeared. i have samsung note 5….

would u suggest any other steps ???

        1. Some cell phones, while they are ostensibly compatible, may not in actuality be compatible. Also, consider removing some of your other apps. There may be a conflict.

          Good luck!

  11. I got a new device and i want a new account how can creat a new account magic jack

  12. I would like to know how I can create a new account a friend advices me to use the app and I downloaded latest version and so far I can’t find the option to create an account, I have killed the app process, deleted the data restarted the app restarted my phone, please if there is anything am doing wrong please tell me, thanks.

    1. If I’m not mistaken, it scrapes all your primary android account particulars during install. They used to give you the first year free. Try accessing settings.

  13. I downloaded magicApp on my Android device. Where do I create an account? All I get is the login screen.

  14. Hi,
I’ve just installed Magic App on my iPhone 6 plus, but I can’t find the option “create a new account” -> there is only the login page without any possibility to scroll down or any button for advanced settings. Any ideas to help?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Alex

  15. i was able to renew magicjack every year, now i cant make any free phone calls from my app
    please help

    1. If you’re using the same phone number as your magicJack device, it should be free. If you’re no longer using the magicJack device, but only the app, you’ll still need to renew.

  16. I installed magicapp or the first time on my Android phone. When I open the app, I don’t have an option to create a new account. Do I have to create an account on the magicapp website?

  17. I live in Germany and when I install the app I don’t get a register field. I am from the US and would like to call home now and then, any suggestions?
